Letter to the Inspector General of Police (Pondicherry) by Ashram’s Managing Trustee

Well-wishers of Sri Aurobindo Ashram just uploaded a letter by the Managing Trustee of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, requesting the Inspector General of Police, Pondicherry, not to permit the Loonies to conduct another dharna in the vicinity of the Ashram. You may want to read their post Dharna Supporting Falsehood Quashed for background. Here we reproduce the Trustee’s letter in copyable form.

To:
The Inspector General of Police
Pondicherry

Sir,

As you are aware, the 15th of August is a very important day for us. Apart from being the Independence Day, it is also the Birth Anniversary of Sri Aurobindo, who had played a crucial role in the Indian Independence Movement. In fact he is considered by many historians to be the first person who had boldly put forth the ideal of complete independence as the one goal to be actively pursued.

To commemorate his birthday, a very large number of followers of Sri Aurobindo come to Pondicherry with a feeling akin to going on a pilgrimage. They start congregating here for almost a week before the 15th of August, which we call the Darshan Day.

It has come to our knowledge that some persons have once again approached the authorities for permission to conduct a dharna around the Main Building of the Ashram. The same group of persons had done this earlier also, and on the last occasion they had organized and brought people from outside Pondicherry for this purpose. In spite of the fact that they were professing to conduct a silent dharna, they had shouted slogans, raised huge banners and finally, manhandled one of the office-bearers of the Ashram leading to the filing of an FIR against 6 persons who had been brought from outside Pondicherry. Even the local MLA had written to the authorities that giving permission for conducting a dharna in such a location is violative of the established norms and practices in Pondicherry. Further those professing to conduct the dharna are very likely to indulge in disruptive activities. Events proved the local MLA to be right in his assessment.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram has received communications from many devotees coming from near and far, who have expressed that conducting a dharna in such a sacred place not only hurts their sentiments, but is disruptive of the peace and tranquility in quest of which they come to Sri Aurobindo Ashram during such important days.

We are at this juncture not going into the merits or lack of merits of the claims, assertions and demands of those who are trying to organize this dharna as that is irrelevant for the present purpose, except to say that those organizing the dharna have also filed a suit in the Court of the Principal District Judge at Pondicherry with a set of demands that is a replica of the demands that were displayed on their hoardings during the last dharna. We would also like to point out that so far the Court has not granted them any relief.

On behalf of the devotees and followers of Sri Aurobindo and Sri Aurobindo Ashram, as well as on our own behalf, we request you not to give permission for conducting any dharna in the vicinity of the Ashram as that would surely disturb the serenity and tranquility of this place in search of which people congregate here from near and far. In case those organizing the dharna would like to conduct it in a location where dharnas and demonstrations are normally permitted in Pondicherry, the administration may surely take a decision keeping in view the intrinsic merits of the case.

Thanking you,
Yours sincerely,

mdg
