Letter from the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association to the Managing Trustee

Dated 26th June 2012.

The Managing Trustee
Sri Aurobindo Ashram

Dear Shri Manoj Dasgupta,

We, the Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers’ & Artistes’ Association, would like to congratulate you and the Board of Trustees of Sri Aurobindo Ashram on the stand taken by the Trust on the controversy over the book “The Lives of Sri Aurobindo”.

We believe that this controversy is completely uncalled for. The book has been widely acclaimed to be a scholarly treatment of Sri Aurobindo’s life. It is also clear through various media reports that while one section of devotees have raised objection to the book there are other devotees who find the book inspiring. We therefore see no reason why some people should seek to impose their view on the Aurobindonian community in particular and on the nation as a whole. Keeping the rich tradition of discourse that this nation has exhibited over the centuries, the government of the day has done the right thing by allowing Peter Heehs to stay in the country.

We would like to place on record our appreciation for your stand that the Ashram does not see itself in the role of either prescribing or proscribing any book and that it leaves the choice entirely to the individual. We also admire the courage that the Trust has demonstrated against all odds by not banishing a writer and a historian who has made the Ashram his home for forty years We hope that the people who are indulging in cheap propaganda would take note of our stand and stop harassing the Ashram and persecuting the author any further.

With Warm and Kind Regards,

    Dear Editor,

Thank you for letting us know about this letter.

It is sad to see that while the world at large is turning to Sri Aurobindo for inspiration, some egoistic persons are trying at the same time to start claiming that they have appointed themselves as the only Treasurers of Sri Aurobindo. The name of Sri Aurobindo can be easily exploited by these self-appointed priests.

Thank God that Sri Aurobindo Ashram exists, an Ashram that can frustrate the schemes and designs of these selfish people who want to dominate over others. What a wonderful Ashram that gives freedom to an individual and fights against fundamentalism. This is true spirituality.

    Congratulations Ashram!!!!!!
